Kim Hancock
Abstract expressionism in mixed media — acrylic and latex, spray paint, crayon, oil, collage and pastel.
Arts Afire Gallery, Coombs, British Columbia. Open to the public 10–4, Monday to Friday, through the summer.
In her own
words
I paint from my heart. I leave lots of room for the viewer to see what they see in it. Kim Hancock
Hancock works in abstract expressionism, in mixed media. Acrylic and latex paint, spray paint, crayon, oil, collage and pastel go into the same surface and are worked into one another until the painting arrives at something she is willing to stop at.
She is deliberate about titles, and deliberately sparing with them. A painting is not named in order to tell you what is in it. What the surface suggests is left to the person standing in front of it, which is the point of working this way at all.
She studied at the University of British Columbia and at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Before settling on Vancouver Island she lived and worked in Japan — where she worked in a gallery and taught English — as well as Germany, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, England and Spain. Arts Afire Gallery has been open in Coombs since 2000.
Selected
paintings
Plates hang at the proportions of the paintings that will fill them. Dimensions are height by width. Every label carries a scale diagram against a 1.75 m figure — a photograph of a painting loses its size before it loses anything else.

Arts Afire
Coombs
Arts Afire has been Hancock's gallery in Coombs since 2000. It is her working studio as much as a room to show in, and for the summer it is open to anyone who wants to walk in — no appointment, no buzzer.
Visitors are as likely to find her working as hanging. Hours below are the posted ones; in practice she is there well outside them.

Classes at
the studio
Hancock teaches out of her own studio, in small numbers, and outdoors when the weather allows. Classes run individually and in groups.
Anyone who cannot afford the tuition is taught free. This is not an occasional exception — it is how the classes have always been run, and it does not need to be discussed at the door.
Individual and group, indoors at the studio or outdoors on location
Free to anyone unable to pay
By enquiry, or in person at the gallery
